Volunteering Terms

Community Cleanup PLG is a volunteer-run neighborhood group, not a company or a government agency. Showing up to a cleanup means you agree to the following. It’s short on purpose.

Volunteering is at your own risk

Street cleanups happen outdoors, on public sidewalks, alongside traffic. There is ordinary physical risk: sharp objects in the trash, uneven pavement, weather, and vehicles. You take part voluntarily and at your own risk, and you are responsible for your own health and safety. We are not able to provide medical care or insurance coverage.

Use the gloves and grabbers we hand out, and don’t reach into anything you can’t see into. Leave broken glass, needles, and anything hazardous where it is and tell a squad leader — we report those to the Department of Sanitation rather than handling them ourselves.

Volunteers under 18

Anyone under 18 is welcome, but should come with a parent or guardian, or with that adult’s permission. Bringing a school group, team, or troop? Email us ahead of time so we can plan for you.

Treat your neighbors well

Everyone is welcome regardless of who they are or where they live. Harassment, slurs, and aggression aren’t tolerated, and a squad leader may ask anyone acting that way to leave. That’s the whole code of conduct.

Photos

We usually take a group photo at the end of a cleanup, and we sometimes publish photos, first names, and quotes from volunteers on this site, in our newsletter, and on Instagram. Tell any squad leader if you’d rather not be photographed — that’s always fine, and no one will ask why.

If a photo or quote of you is already published and you want it taken down, email us and we’ll remove it. No reason needed.

Community service hours

We sign school, DOE, and National Honor Society forms for hours actually spent at a cleanup. See community service hours for how that works.

Cleanups can change

Dates, times, and street corners change, and cleanups are occasionally called off for weather. The join page always shows the next one; that page is the source of truth if something here disagrees with it.
